10 Days Till Neighborday: How Are You Celebrating?

April 18, 2013

On April 27, GOOD community members everywhere (in 34 states and 12 countries so far, but our list is growing!) will be celebrating Neighborday. From potlucks to street clean-ups, people have inspiring plans to be social the old-fashioned way—spending quality face-to-face time with the friends and neighbors in their communities.

Will you join us? With only 10 days left, we're hoping you'll sign up and create your own Neighborday with our toolkit. It's easy—check out the map above to see where people all over the country are celebrating and read on for inspiration to create your own.

  • Los Angeles, California: CicLAvia and GOOD Los Angeles are starting early on April 21 by biking all over the city, then hosting trivia challenges, a lemonade stand, and photo booth. Then, on April 27, Nisha Vida is hosting a Crenshaw plant and seed swap, as well as a kombucha-making skillshare. GOOD Associate Features Editor Alessandra Rizzotti is hosting a Silverlake neighborhood seedbombing and group walk, local business meet-up, and community storytelling show at the Lyric Hyperion Theater and Café from noon to midnight. Cameron Hanson is having neighbors come over to her Mar Vista home with hand-drawn maps highlighting the favorite spots in their neighborhood. Stephanie Speights is transforming her Santa Monica alley into a living street by installing plants with her neighbors.

  • Durham, North Carolina: Dipika Kohli and Akira Morita are hosting a popup art show for STITCH at a Better Block event, asking neighbors to answer one question: What word would you want your neighborhood to represent? The words will then be compiled together for local artists to create original pieces of artwork for downtown storefronts and public spaces.

  • Dallas, Texas: Patrick McDonnell is participating in a community mural painting event.

  • Silver Spring, Maryland: Megan Moriarty and Fenton Street Market are hosting a scavenger hunt challenge for a chance to win a $20 certificate from the market.

  • Mitte, Berlin, Germany: GOOD Creativity curator Yasha Wallin and her neighbors are visiting art galleries together, then eating at their local restaurant.

  • Santa Cruz, California: Kischka Bluspiro created an email group for her neighbors.

  • Calgary, Canada: Dez Pressey is having her neighbors create the largest picnic blanket of all time in the field behind their homes, using all the blankets they have.

  • Minneapolis, Minnesota: Herman Milligan will be asking his neighbors, both adults and kids, to talk about why they like their neighborhood. Neighbors will bring favorite dishes, desserts, and beverages to share.

  • Johannesburg, South Africa: Beverly Nel is cleaning up an open lot in her neighborhood.

  • Little Rock, Arkansas: Michael Carpenter is hosting a barbeque with beans, beats and bounce houses.

  • Portland, Oregon: Celeste Hamilton will be inviting neighbors over for milkshakes and a mapping activity on her front lawn.

  • London, England: Priya Prakash is hosting a local food tour through Changify Camberwell to help neighbors focus on well-being and healthy choices.

  • St. Louis, Missouri: De Andrea Nichols and her neighbors will paint and garden at the Rebuild Foundation.

  • Sign up for Neighborday, tell us your plans, and send us footage of everything you're doing with your neighbors for the GOOD Neighborday documentary!
