Things are easier said than done, or so the old adage goes, and we couldn't agree more. That's why we do 30 Days of GOOD (#30DaysofGOOD), a monthly attempt to live better. This month we're going "Back to School" and committing to learn something new every day.

Have you ever dreamed about saving the day? Learn first aid and CPR, and you could be somebody’s hero.

When it comes to health and safety education, there’s no substitute for professional, hands-on training. But a useful first step is to familiarize yourself with some basic injury and illness care concepts.

A good place to start is with the Mayo Clinic’s First Aid Index. It’s got useful articles for dozens of common medical maladies.

Then, head over to Expert Village’s simple and clear Basic First Aid & Emergency Medical Treatment videos on YouTube. They're useful guides that show, among other things, how to check for consciousness, treat minor burns, and assess when a situation needs professional medical attention.

St John’s Ambulance offers a 40-episode podcast called First Aid Advice, which provides information about recognizing and treating a variety of injuries and illnesses. Available on iTunes, the episodes are well-produced and easily digestible, usually running about a minute and a half in length.

And if you’re ready to take it to the next level, consider becoming certified. The American Red Cross offers a variety of first aid and CPR classes for both "lay responders" (AKA you and me) and professional rescuers. Some classes cost money but many are free of charge. Visit redcrossonlinetraining.org, find the course you’re looking for, plug in your zip code and whether you're looking for hands-on training or online education, and they’ll show you what to do.

Here's to staying safe!
