Bacon and Eggs: Classic Food Pairings Get the Pantone Treatment

Never before have bacon and eggs looked so perfectly designed then in the hands of David Schwen, a Minneapolis-based graphic designer who has taken food pairing to a whole new aesthetic level. For his Instagram project 'Pantone Pairings', Schwen has compiled common palate pleasers into creative compositions based on the Pantone book—more or less a bible for designers. Peas and carrots live cutely side by side, as do cookies and milk and of course, macaroni and cheese.

Of the project, Schwen told Instagram “As a designer, you’re constantly picking color chips and pairing them up with one another. A while back I had an idea of making Pantone chips out of real household objects—sponges, cardboard, and the like. But while I was finishing up a poster design, I had taped two Pantone chips together to see how they looked next to one another. Instantly I thought of how people pair food together, and that was that. Pantone pairings.” The project is ongoing, so to see more follow Schwen on Instagram or look for the hashtag #pantonepairings. This month, we're challenging the GOOD community to host a dinner party and cook a meal that contains fewer ingredients than the number of people on the guest list. Throughout March, we'll share ideas and resources for being more conscious about our food and food systems. Join the conversation at good.is/food and on Twitter at #chewonit.
