Crazy If True: Hackers Claim to Hold Romney Tax Return for Ransom

by Dave Burdick

First, let me say this: I don't care to see Mitt Romney's tax returns. I already know what I think a voter needs to know about his beliefs on taxes—despite not having seen a tax return and despite the ambiguity surrounding the actual Romney/Ryan tax plan. Both major candidates have long records, full of past decisions on economic issues, and of course plenty of statements from this election cycle on what they'd do over the next four years. There's nothing in that tax return that's going to help me make an informed decision in the voting booth more than what's already out there.

That's why I am utterly gobsmacked by this story, which says that hackers claim to have gotten hold of the much discussed documentation, and that they're holding it ransom for—wait for it—$1 million. Their deadline for action is September 28.

It's going to get weirder, I'm sure, but can we, as thinking people, now agree that the focus on this issue might have been a little unhealthy?
