CVS Caremark: Building Healthier Communities With Strategic Local Grants

One of the best parts of my job as the Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and Community Relations at CVS Caremark is that every day, I have the privilege of working with amazing non-profit organizations throughout the country making a real impact in our local communities.

As a pharmacy innovation company, CVS Caremark is committed to helping people on their path to better health and we give back to the communities we serve through impactful community engagement and support. This includes a combination of donations, gifts in-kind and colleague volunteerism to support charitable causes that impact the lives of the people we serve every day.

Most notably, our foundation, the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, awards grants each year to organizations that are increasing access to health care and providing services aimed at helping children achieve their best health. We’ve just announced that the Charitable Trust has awarded grants totaling more than $2.6 million to 66 non-profit organizations nationwide—to support innovative programs in 2013 that address the significant health care needs in our local communities.

Across the country, we know that many people still do not have access to quality, affordable health care. And, as a company, we are committed to reducing barriers and increasing access to quality health care services that provide easy and effective solutions to help improve outcomes and lower overall costs. Grants totaling nearly $700,000 were awarded to support innovative approaches that increase access to care for underserved populations—including support for mobile health innovations that bring health care services to locations where people need them most.

Through our CVS Caremark All Kids Can program, which is dedicated to helping all kids on their path to better health, foundation grants were awarded to support programs focused on children’s health & wellness. We know that early intervention services are critical to support a child’s development in their early years of life and we invested in programs that are using innovative approaches to identify and treat health challenges from birth to age five. We also provided grants to organizations that are implementing coordinated care models that connect all medical and treatment services for a child into one comprehensive plan to help them achieve their best health. Finally, we know that inclusive opportunities for physical activity are exceedingly important for kids, as funding for physical education programs continues to be cut, and so we funded a variety of school- and community-based programs to help kids stay active.

This funding truly celebrates the amazing work being done by our grantees and partners and I am so proud of the impact we have made in our local communities. As we work toward building healthier communities, we know it would not be possible without the dedication of our 200,000 colleagues who serve their communities and bring our purpose of helping people on their path to better health to life each and every day.
