Some think that every tree has a soul. It's hard not to agree after a walk in the woods, surrounded by these beautifully imposing creatures that creak, sway and at times seem to talk to the world. One artist couple, Zonenkinder, is toying with the physical manifestation of that notion by drawing faces on trees around the world, bringing them to life and revealing their personalities.
Zonenkinder, who often engages the natural world as a canvas, explains, "In the Tree Project we visualize the atmosphere of the moment, the usually hidden spirit and dreams of the trees, and the the living nature which surrounds us. By painting eyes, faces and grimaces on the trees, by ornamenting and dressing them we emphasize our close and unique connection with nature. Thereby reflecting that trees are exceptional and beautiful living individuals. This stands in contrast to the often destructive and indifferent interaction with the environment of mankind."
