GOOD 100: Meet Rahul Raj, Advocating Against Disposable Consumer Culture

Rahul Raj, the director of sustainability and merchandising innovation at Wal-Mart, knows that one man’s trash is quite often another man’s treasure. Through his work, Raj optimistically pursues sustainable revenue streams for the humongous retailer, expanding their solar program and launching a series of initiatives to recycle and resell used or broken consumer electronics. 

Raj has spent the last decade changing the way we think about our most ubiquitous brands, providing companies with hard incentives to participate in sustainable practices. 

“We believe there is much value to be captured in refurbishing and reusing products that already exist,” Raj says. “As such, evaluating and developing new ways for Wal-Mart to strengthen our Save Money. Live Better promise, by encouraging consumers to efficiently share or trade-in electronics and other high-value items, will be among my biggest projects for 2013.”

Raj is constantly on the hunt for innovative products, services and business models that deliver positive social and economic outcomes. “I am both liberated and limited by my imagination to redefine what is possible,” he says.
