Odes to Madiba: Five Amazing Songs About Nelson Mandela

by Mary Slosson

June 28, 2013

Known affectionately as "Madiba," a nickname from his Xhosa roots, Nelson Mandela was the figurehead of South Africa. A key leader of the movement against apartheid, he spent 27 years in jail as a result of his struggle to free the country from white rule. He went on to become the first black South African president in 1994. The world is now watching South Africa closely once more, as the 94-year-old Mandela is in a Pretoria hospital in critical condition. The videos below represent just a snippet of the power and joy his life has inspired.

"My Black President" by Brenda Fassie

"Asimbonanga" by Johnny Clegg & Peter Gabriel

"Mandela (Bring Him Back Home)" by Hugh Masekela

"Madiba Bay" by Koos Kombuis

"Nelson Mandela" by The Specials
