Spend any time riding Los Angeles's buses and you'll get to know the shows of TransitTV, a local broadcasting system that airs news, trivia, and a pretty entertaining (if pun-ridden) cooking segment. Now a new art project is looking to infuse local culture into that programming-in-motion. Out the Window is looking for two-minute videos that are either created by local artists and filmmakers, or prominently feature Los Angeles as a subject or a setting. The selected videos will be shown on more than 2,000 Metro buses driving throughout the county daily—that's an audience of over one million viewers a day.
Out the Window was initiated by Freewaves, a media arts organization which launched the project earlier this year with four youth groups that created graphic banners and videos about their neighborhoods. Like the youth-oriented project, these videos will be geotagged to places in L.A. and will ask for rider responses to the videos via text message.
After being selected by group of local curators, the films will be shown in summer or fall, and I hear there's even going to be some screening events. But you'll have to board a Metro bus to see the films, of course. All details here, deadline is March 1.
