The Decade of No Progress?

Rather instantaneously, the world seems to have again shifted its focus.Since Christmas Day, when 23-year-old Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab boarded a Northwestern flight bound for Detroit with a syringe full of chemicals reportedly sewn into his underpants, the story of his life comes trickling in.The son of a Nigerian banker, an engineering student at University of College London.Reports that Yemen may have provided him with explosives. And more recently, that it was his foreign education to blame.Just last week, the Los Angeles Times ran a prescient feature about the challenges facing schoolchildren in Yemen. I urge you to read it, especially following Senator Lieberman's talk of war-this time against Yemen."Somebody in our government said to me in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen, Iraq was yesterday's war. Afghanistan is today's war. If we don't act pre-emptively, Yemen will be tomorrow's war. That's the danger we face," he said during an appearance Sunday on Fox News. Maybe Paul Krugman isĀ right. Maybe this was the decade when we learned absolutely nothing at all.How are you making sense of it?Photo via
