Visualizing the Clif Bar 2 Mile Challenge

Taking a trip in the city? Chances are good that you aren't going more than two miles, and that you're driving. In fact, 40 percent of all urban trips fall within a two-mile ring around the trip's starting point, and nearly all of them are done by car.

But two miles is not a very large distance. You can easily cover it by bike instead of by driving. And if more people biked their urban trips, we could significantly reduce our carbon output. To that end, Clif Bar has created the 2 Mile Challenge, for which they're asking people to pledge to ride their bike instead of drive. Simply go to the 2 Mile Challenge website, sign up, and start recording how many miles you ride each day. You can pick one of three nonprofit organizations—Alliance for Biking and Walking, 350.org, and Safe Routes to School—and the collective miles accumulated by the organization's supporters will help it win a bigger share of the $100,000 grant. Plus, you'll accrue points for other fun activities.

To track the progress of the 2 Mile Challenge, check out this interactive graphic, which will show you how many trips have been taken by bike, how many miles have been completed, and which states are contributing the most miles. Keep on checking; it will update every day.
