Winner Announced: Send a Valentine to Women Who Really Need It

A few weeks back, we teamed up with ABC's Be the Change: Save a Life to design a different kind of valentine: one that could act as a global "group hug" of sorts—a way to honor and celebrate survivors of physical and sexual violence, and to raise attention to an issue that's too rarely talked about.

Around the world, up to six of every 10 women will experience physical and/or sexual violence in her lifetime. Roughly 1.8 million deaths of women and children in India are due to domestic violence. In Colombia, one woman is reportedly killed by her partner or former partner every six days. And in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, rape and sexual violence are routinely used as tactics of war.

And it's not just limited to women.

The response we received was overwhelming, with more than 50 submissions from places near and far, including a photo of a seashell, a set of playing cards, some intricate postcards, and a public reminder to celebrate love in its truest form. Take a look.

After posting our finalists, we asked the community to vote. The winner, Rachel Martin, designed a card that every woman would do well to keep by her bedside, offering encouraging words to women.

Rachel will receive a GOOD T-shirt and a free subscription (or gift subscription) to our magazine, and her photo will be published in the next issue of GOOD.

We are now compiling all of the images we received and distributing them to a handful of clinics and community centers around the world. We'll post photos of where those images end up, so thanks to all for taking part, and stay tuned for more.
