Using Problems to Solve Problems

Inside Luis Von Ahn's Duolingo by GOOD Partnerships
July 8, 2014

Earlier this year, GOOD and Progressive teamed up to bring you the Progress Is GOOD Challenge, a hunt for creative change makers whose initiatives are pushing to make our world a little bit better.

In the spirit of celebrating progress and the driving forces behind it, we’re thrilled to announce the winner of this years challenge is Duolingo.

We were inspired by the innovative language-learning platform not only for its fun, effective, and completely free skill building services, but also for its powerful global impact and reach.

Students use the Duolingo platform to translate news from English to their native languages as they hone their new English skills. And, as they improve their language proficiency, they convert previously untranslated text into other languages, making news and information more accessible across the globe in real time.

The brainchild of crowdsourcing savant Luis von Ahn, Duolingo creatively marries gamification, human computation, and social impact — making it a truly progressive company that embraces the ethos of living well by doing good.

This post is brought to you by GOOD, with support from Progressive. Learn how Progressive continues to inspire social innovators to find creative solutions at Progressive's Apron Project
