Hunter Franks Neighborhood Impresario

Hunter Franks created The Neighborhood Postcard Project to combat the negative stereotypes of marginalized San Francisco neighborhoods. Franks wanted residents to share positive stories with others in their city by snail mail, in hopes of building community and changing attitudes. The concept is simple: Franks hosts meetups in public spaces for people to fill out blank postcards – draw a picture on the front, inscribe a fun message or fond memory on the back – and then he takes it upon himself to send out the final products to random local residents. Additionally, Franks founded the League of Creative Interventionists, a worldwide network of people working to build community through, you guessed it, creativity, and is a co-founder of Freespace, a movement that activates underutilized spaces into temporary cultural centers for people to create change in their own lives, communities, or the larger world.
